Now this is the type of business I’d like

I like their idea but I think I can do better as far as motif goes. They seem to want to invoke a more Communist image. I mean what does a red star, fist, or even the grain in the fist represent?

If I could build my own microbrewery/pub/restaurant it won’t be a “Revolutionary” concept.

Obama, Booker, Patrick

leave a comment

From the Politico and it’s something that I look forward to. Besides who says the old generation that have been in politics since the Civil Rights movement should stay in power forever. There might need to be some good ideas in Black America…

There’s nowhere that Barack Obama’s argument about generational change sounds more sharply than in African-American politics, and his place in that changing black political landscape is on display this week.

Obama campaigned yesterday with Newark Mayor Corey Booker, and today he’s in Boston with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. All three are Democrats who came up outside the two main, often linked channels of black political advancement: the urban machine, and the church. They are too young to have earned fame in the civil rights movement. Obama, Patrick, and Booker each won with substantial white and black support, and Obama’s support from the two relative outsiders contrasts with Hillary Clinton’s success at recruiting support from the older African-American establishment.

“We can no longer tolerate the recycling of the same people over and over again,” Booker said in his introduction yesterday. “We need somebody that’s going to come in and have vision…that ‘s going to have insight…that’s’ going to have audacity…that’s going to have integrity and authenticity.”

Bobby Jindal wins Louisiana governorship

leave a comment

Bobby Jindal is an Indian-American whose parents immigated from India to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and apparently they’ve been here ever since with Jindal served in posts in Louisiana state government and he was an assisstant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Planning and Evaluation under President Bush. He ran for governor four years ago but was defeated by Kathleen Blanco who chose not to run for re-election.

The only reason I mention it here is that Jindal is certainly the first non-white politician to assume the governorship of a Southern state since the Reconstruction era. Reconstruction was after the Civil War post 1865 to about 1877. Louisiana in fact had the first black American to become a governor of a US State.

Anyway congrats to Bobby Jindal in his victory and I hope that Louisiana is a better place for it.

I want to give you some links here. A variety of stories and even blog posts that I’ve been able to find. I must say that this list is not comprehensive by any means.

Joe-mentum 2008?

leave a comment

And the answer is provided by Real Clear Politics today…

Four years ago Joe Lieberman coined the term “Joe-mentum” – to much ridicule as it turned out, since by the time he came up with the corny catch phrase his campaign was already dead in the water.

This time around, however, Joe Biden’s campaign is the one claiming their guy has the “Big Mo,” as you can see from the today’s memo to interested parties which cites his upward movement in the most recent round of polls in Iowa:

Poll: Clinton trouncing Obama among black women

leave a comment

So I wonder what’s Hillary’s appeal among black women? Is it because most still love the charismatic former President? From the Political Ticker

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s lead over Sen. Barack Obama, her chief rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, is growing among African-American voters who are registered Democrats, and particularly among black women, a poll said Wednesday.

Among black registered Democrats overall, Clinton had a 57 percent to 33 percent lead over Obama.

That’s up from 53 percent for Clinton and 36 percent for Obama in a poll carried out in April.

How about the rest of the population?

The former first lady’s strongest support among blacks came from black women, 68 percent of whom identified her as their likely choice, versus 25 percent who cited Obama, the senator from Illinois who is African-American.

Black men who are registered Democrats were nearly evenly split, with 42 percent favoring Clinton and 46 percent favoring Obama. The sampling error of that question was plus-or-minus 8 points.

Can Republicans take back the House in 2008?

leave a comment

What does CNN’s political ticker say about Republicans taking back the House? Well take a look at this video by Bill Schneider, that’s a name I have heard from in years. There’s isn’t any such thing as CNN’s Inside Politics anymore sadly. That was my favorite afternoon show way back when about three or so years ago. :(

I’m ready for the new Star Trek movie

leave a comment

I’ve ranted and raved recently over Doctor Who. Perhaps that was only because there hasn’t been enough Star Trek to satisfy my science fiction appetite. Either way a new Star Trek project is coming out next year.

TrekMovie.com is a blog that talks about developments for the new Star Trek movie coming out next year. They’ve set up a page to discuss known details about the new film coming out. Reading some of the information from there it’s looking good.

There’s a new team involved Rick Berman or anyone else associated with the last Star Trek movie called Nemesis will mostly have nothing to do with this project. Leonard Nimoy is going to be in this film while William Shatner at this moment appears to be sitting this one out unless the production team can come up with an excuse to bring him in for cameo. Of course this film is an adventure of the original Enterprise crew but the plan is to recast all the characters.

I’m excited about this of course. I’ve always considered Capt. Kirk a hero and while it won’t be Shatner playing the role, it’ll just be another Kirk adventure for me. While I’d have been conservative about the casting, I figure the original actors are either getting old or dying why not recast the Enterprise crew and start fresh. I guess I’m supporting that concept.

Oh and one other thing. I am a Doctor Who fan but it’s important to know that I have been and always will be a Star Trek fan. Doctor Who will not replace what amounts to be my first love. :D
